Security checks

Security control at Zurich Airport is carried out in a thorough manner to achieve highest quality standards. In order to reduce waiting times, we require your support. Following, you will find information allowing you to optimally prepare for the security control process.

Baggage security checks

Your baggage has to be screened before it can be loaded onto the aircraft. This procedure is carried out after check-in via a baggage sorting system.

In some cases it is necessary for baggage to be opened in order to check it, and this is carried out by a specialist in the presence of the passenger concerned.

Boarding pass control

When you enter the passenger area your boarding pass has to be checked - please have it ready for inspection before you proceed.

Passenger and hand luggage control

You and your hand luggage have to be checked to ensure you are not carrying any prohibited items (see regulations prohibiting the carriage of liquids in hand luggage).

Please make the following preparations:

  • Put any metal objects (cash, keys, mobile phone, iPod, camera, etc.) in your jacket pocket or bag. You do not have to unpack these items.

  • Please place the following items in the plastic trays provided:
    - Laptop (unpacked) in a separate tray.
    - Clothing (coat, jacket, etc.) in the next tray.
    - Add your handbag and all items that will fit in the tray.
    - Please do not overfill trays
    - You may use several trays if required.

  • Place any items that do not fit in a tray directly onto the conveyor.

  • Pass through the metal detector when instructed to do so by a member of staff. If the alarm is triggered, you may have to enter a booth to be searched.

  • Now you can pick up your belongings.

  • A second check of your hand luggage may be required. If instructed, please open your bag so that the security officer can check it manually.

  • In some cases an additional search may be required in a separate room.

  • After you have collected your belongings, please add your trays to the pile.

If you use a pacemaker or other medical device such as a shunt or valve (e.g. hydrocephalus), please inform a member of the security staff before you pass through the metal detector.
