Zurich Airport is well prepared in case of an outbreak of bird flu or other epidemic in Switzerland.
Bird flu (H5N1) is a virus found in birds, in particular chickens and water fowl. It is an epizootic that can be transmitted to humans. The virus has not been detected in Switzerland since April 2006.
Poultry stock in Switzerland have not been infected so far, and there have been no cases of transmission to human beings here. In today’s globalised society, however, the risk of being affected by a pandemic cannot be completely eliminated.
