Expansion and partitioning of Skymetro
We are centralising security checks, extending the "Skymetro" passenger train and renovating Dock B. These construction projects are all part of the "Zurich 2010" project.
Following the implementation of the measures to accommodate the introduction of the Schengen Agreement on 29 March 2009, further construction work is being undertaken at Zurich Airport as part of the “Zurich 2010” project.
The core element of the centralisation of security checks is the construction of a new central security check building between Check-in 1 and 2. When the new security check building opens, the security check process will be a much faster and more comfortable experience for passengers. Decentralised security checks will only take place in individual gate areas for non-Schengen passengers transferring directly through Zurich.
The partitioning of Skymetro is also connected with this, because the centralised security check process now in place requires that passengers (departing and transferring) who have undergone a security check have to be separated from those passengers (arriving) who have not been checked.
Skymetro trains will be extended from two to three carriages to compensate for the impact the partitioning will have on capacity.
The extra carriages will be delivered, fitted and configured between July 2009 and May 2010.
However, at the start of the construction work, i.e. from July to December 2009, the capacity of Skymetro will be reduced. During this time, an additional replacement bus service similar to the established processes deployed during Skymetro service interruptions will be in operation.
Start of demolition work on Dock BThe demolition work on Dock B is starting in July 2009. There should not be any operational restrictions as the building site will be fully accessible on the landside via a bridge. The building work is scheduled for completion at the end of 2011.
The alteration and reopening of Dock B is the key part of the project, since it ensures that Zurich Airport can continue to provide top-quality services after the implementation of the Schengen Agreement. The planned conversion will allow flexible processing of Schengen and non-Schengen flights at up to nine aircraft stands.
The separate waiting areas will be on level G0 for non-Schengen passengers and on G1 for Schengen passengers. There will also be a spectators’ terrace.
