The main aim of the Zurich 2010 project is to enable Flughafen Zürich AG to implement the Schengen Agreement by providing the required passenger infrastructure. The revamping of Dock B, which is in the implementation phase, and the centralisation of security checks will enhance the quality and user-friendliness of the airport.

Since 29 March 2009, passport controls have no longer been required for passengers travelling from Zurich Airport to a destination within the Schengen area. However, passengers transferring between Schengen and non-Schengen areas at Zurich Airport have had to undergo a passport check since this date. The necessary infrastructure and process modifications have been implemented smoothly.

In order to compensate for the loss in handling capacity resulting from the implementation of the Schengen Agreement, Dock B is to undergo major alterations. The new dock will have two handling levels for Schengen and non-Schengen passengers, will offer space for up to nine aircraft, and will have eight bus gates serving aircraft that are parked without direct access to the dock. The flexible structure of the new dock offers significant operational advantages.

The demolition work started at the beginning of 2009 and is set to last for the whole year. Construction will commence in early 2010 and the new Dock B is set to be handed over for operation at the end of 2011.

The centralisation of security checks will mean that all passengers and staff will be screened before they enter the Airside Center, which will allow passengers more time to enjoy the wide range of shops and restaurants. Centralising security checks will also allow Flughafen Zürich AG to reduce its operating costs. The demolition of the old buildings to make way for the construction of the security check building has got underway causing various shops and restaurants to be relocated. The construction of the security check building is also scheduled for completion at the end of 2011.

The demolition work on Dock B is starting in July 2009. There should not be any operational restrictions as the building site will be fully accessible on the landside via a bridge. The building work is scheduled for completion at the end of 2011.

The alteration and reopening of Dock B is the key part of the project, since it ensures that Zurich Airport can continue to provide top-quality services after the implementation of the Schengen Agreement. The planned conversion will allow flexible processing of Schengen and non-Schengen flights at up to nine aircraft stands.

The separate waiting areas will be on level G0 for non-Schengen passengers and on G1 for Schengen passengers. There will also be a spectators’ terrace.

Alongside its security function, the new building will also allow more space for attractive duty-free shopping. The new process will provide passengers with more shopping opportunities after they pass through security and will make the time spent before departure more enjoyable.
