The building permit for the fifth stage of building development stipulates that at least 42% of all people must travel to Zurich Airport on public transport. The airport operator has to conduct regular surveys on this modal-split objective.
The modal split at Zurich Airport has improved by three percentage points to 46.3% since the last survey in 2003. On one hand, this welcome development is explained by the excellent rail, bus and Glatttal light railway connections to the airport. On the other, targeted support measures have contributed to the increase in staff using public transport to travel to work.
The modal split in detail
The modal split indicates the relative proportions of people using public transport and private vehicles based on the total traffic volume of passengers, visitors and staff. It has been conducted on a regular basis for Zurich Airport since 1994. In that year, it stood at 34%, but has constantly risen since. It reached 38.6% in 1999, 43.2% in 2003 and 46.3% in 2009.
