Bengaluru International Airport was developed as a greenfield airport and went operational on May 24th, 2008 after a construction time of 35 months. At the same time the old airport closed for commercial operation.
Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the owner and operator of the airport, is set up as a public private partnership. Flughafen Zürich AG holds a 5% equity stake in BIAL.
