During April 2010 1’556’838 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport, a loss of 14.8% versus April 2009. The year to date passenger volume rose by 1.8%.
The significant decline in passenger numbers has to be seen in the context of the volcanic eruption in Iceland and the consequential closure of Zurich Airport from April 16 (9.30pm) until April 20 (8.00am) respectively the closure of major parts of European air space as of April 15. It is not foreseeable how many passengers will make up their flight at a later time. At this time we adhere to the guidance for the full year 2010 of 3 to 5 percent passenger growth. O&D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) declined by 11.1% to 1’032’392 compared to previous April (YTD +2.9%). Transfer passengers are down by 21.3% to 518’720 in April (YTD -0.3%). The transfer rate which was at 36.2% last April is currently at 33.4% (YTD 35.9%).
The current low cost passenger market share is at 10.2% (YTD 10.0%), showing a decrease in passenger figures of 12.5% (YTD +6.7%) versus previous year.
Air Traffic Movements (ATM’s) decreased by 10.0% to 19’392 in April versus previous year (YTD -0.6%). The decrease divides into a loss of 13.6% for airlines (YTD -1.7%) and a gain of 11.3% for general aviation and others (YTD +6.5%), as flying under visual flight rules was still allowed during the flight ban.
The average Passenger per movement figure (airline passengers only) currently is at 97.6 (99.2 previous year) or 94.5 YTD (91.3 previous year). The average seat load factor saw a decrease of 0.9 percentage points to 71.0% (YTD 69.2%).
