Zurich Airport News Flash No. 9 / Zurich Airport Key Figures - April 2011
2,020,707 passengers were handled at Zurich Airport during April 2011, a gain of 29.8% versus April 2010. The year to date passenger growth stands at +10.5%.
The significant increase in passenger numbers has to be seen in the context of the volcanic eruption in Iceland in April 2010 and the consequential closure of Zurich Airport from April 16 (9.30pm) until April 20 (8.00am) respectively the closure of major parts of European air space as of April 15, 2010.
O&D or local passengers (originating or departing from Zurich) increased by 29.0% to 1,331,394 compared to previous April (YTD +11.7%). Transfer passengers are up by 31.6% to 682,648 in April (YTD +8.5%). The transfer rate which was at 33.4% last April is currently at 33.9% (YTD 35.2%).
The current low cost passenger market share is at 10.9% (YTD 10.5%), showing an increase in passenger figures of 39.4% (YTD +16.3%) versus previous year.
Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) increased by 19.0% to 23,080 in April versus previous year (YTD +9.2%). The increase divides into a gain of 22.9% for airlines (YTD +9.0%) and a gain of 1.2% for general aviation and others (YTD +10.3%).
The average Passenger per Movement figure (airline passengers only) currently is at 103.2 (97.6 previous year) or 95.8 YTD (94.5 previous year). The average seat load factor saw an increase of 3 percentage points to 73.9% (YTD 69.1%).
Total turnover (net sales to consumers) during April was CHF 39.5m (+12.2% versus previous year). Turnover per departing passenger in April was CHF 39.1, which is 13.5 percent lower than last year. Year to date April, total turnover saw a increase of 0.8% (CHF 149.2m) and turnover per departing passenger decreased by 8.8% (CHF 41.4). As a result of the volcanic eruption in 2010, comparison to last year, especially of turnover per departing passenger, is - as expected - not meaningful.
