Zurich Airport News Flash No. 21 / Clear Commitment to Zurich Airport
The voters of the Canton of Zurich clearly rejected the cantonal referendum “Behördeninitiative II” (No new or expanded Runways) and the counterproposal. Flughafen Zürich AG is pleased to note that blocking Zurich Airport’s development is not acceptable for a majority of the voters.
Based on the public vote, the Swiss Federal Government now has to fix the developmental planning of the airport region in the “Sectoral Aviation Infrastructure Plan (SAIP)” and especially include the model Jopt into these detailed plans. Jopt is the only model which allows for a runway extension. With finalising the SAIP process, legal certainty and planning reliability will be created for Flughafen Zürich AG as well as for the residents and municipalities around the airport.
Moreover, the result of the vote sends a clear signal to Germany. By rejecting the two proposals, Zurich’s voters show their willingness to contribute to a settlement of the ongoing dispute between Germany and Switzerland regarding air traffic noise. Therewith, the foundations for an acceptable solution for all sides have been laid.
