Viewing platform for plane spotters and new Heligrill open from 28 April 2017

The area on the western side of Zurich Airport with a view of the intersection of runways 10/28 and 16/34 is a favourite place for plane spotters to hang out. From 28 April 2017, visitors can look forward to a four-metre high viewing platform and the new Heligrill.

This popular place for plane spotters falls within "Zone West", one of the largest development areas remaining at Zurich Airport. The project is being implemented in several phases. In summer 2016, the diggers moved in for the first stage of the project. Here, on the site of the old Heliport Grill, two new aircraft stands are being constructed for aircraft types up to the size of a Boeing 777.

The expansion also involved moving the airport fence around 200 metres towards Rümlang. As a result, plane spotters will not be quite so close to the action on the runways in future. Instead, they can look forward to a new, raised viewing platform which is located right next to the new airport fence and is over four metres high. Breathtaking photos are still guaranteed thanks to the largely unobstructed view of the airport. For skaters and cyclists, the spot is still easily accessible via the road running alongside the airport fence. The airport perimeter fence will once again feature peepholes following completion of the aircraft stands, which is scheduled for October 2017. The viewing platform is officially open to the public as of 28 April 2017.

New Heligrill: opening weekend from 28 April until 1 May 2017
Refreshments will continue to be provided on site in the form of the Heligrill, which also opens on 28 April 2017. Fit into a large converted Mi-8 helicopter, this restaurant certainly lives up to its name. The crew behind the Runway34 restaurant will be offering visitors a contemporary culinary experience throughout the whole week between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Heligrill is offering everyone who stops by during the long opening weekend (Friday, 28 April 2017 up to and including Monday, 1 May 2017) a special "Heli punch" and delicious snacks for free. There will also be free ice cream for younger guests.

The four-metre high viewing platform for plane spotters and the Heligrill were inaugurated on 27 April 2017.
