The viewing platform and the Heligrill on the western side of the airport are proving a big hit with the public.
On 27 April 2017, the opening ceremony for the viewing platform, dubbed "plane spotters' hill", on the western perimeter of the airport was held in the pouring rain, accompanied by alpine horns and in the presence of representatives of the municipality of Rümlang, the plane spotter community and the media. Since then several dozen people, including walkers, cyclists, families and aviation enthusiasts, can usually be found on the four-metre high hill overlooking the runway intersection, especially in good weather. Background to the opening: Two new aircraft stands are being built at the previous viewpoint in Zone West. As a result, the airport fence had to be moved about 200 metres. Although aviation fans are now not quite so close to the action, the new plane spotters' hill still guarantees breathtaking photographs.
Heligrill offers refreshments
The food & drink options are also new. Since the opening weekend, the operators of the Runway 34 restaurant have been offering refreshments in the "Heligrill" to walkers and aviation fans every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. They prepare a wide range of warm and cold dishes in a large converted Mi-8 helicopter. With their contemporary culinary offering, the operators are aiming to make the Heli a crowd-puller. Looks like they are already succeeding!
