Zurich Airport opened its doors on 1 and 2 September 2018 to mark its 70th anniversary. Over the two days, a total of around 68,000 visitors used the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at all the facets of airport operations.

Thanks to the cooperation with various sponsors and airport partners as well as the commitment of around 150 helpers, Zurich Airport staged a multi-faceted event on eight event spaces. A year ago, the organisers arranged a number of concerts in addition to the air shows, exhibitions, guided walking tours and bus tours.

The set-up work was carried out during regular operations in the week before the event and required considerable commitment from all involved. Among other things, a crane hoisted tents into position on observation deck B and the rooftop lounge on car park 6. The Tango stand near the hangars was made available to the public as the venue for an aviation exhibition featuring different aircraft, helicopters and special airport vehicles on an area covering 22,000 square metres. Some 120 additional signs were used to guide visitors.

The organisers’ initial conclusion is positive. Around 68,000 guests visited the Airport Experience weekend. No noteworthy incidents occurred. The air shows, guided tours and bus tours were very well attended. It was necessary to halt admission to certain areas at times for security reasons, once the maximum capacity had been reached. The next Airport Experience Weekend is likely to be in 2020.
