Participation process for the Glatt upgrade in the Rümlang/Oberglatt segment completed

The Glatt upgrade project entails enhancing the relatively featureless river basin on the western side of Zurich Airport in terms of its environmental and recreation value as well as providing improved flood protection. The concluding event held today marks the end of the participation process relaunched in September 2017. The airport operator will now submit the planning application for the southern section between Opfikon (Tolwäng) and Rümlang (Fromatt) to FOCA for approval. It should be available for public inspection as of mid-February 2019.

Based on the "Glatt Area Landscape Development Rümlang / Oberglatt" concept drafted by the Canton of Zurich between July 2012 and July 2014, the airport operator relaunched the planning work for the Glatt area upgrade with the approval and involvement of the Canton of Zurich in spring 2017. This project will now involve enhancing the environmental and recreation value of what is currently a relatively featureless river basin and providing for better flood protection. Given the high demand for housing and development, the area is under considerable pressure from various sides. The project aims to preserve environmentally valuable habitats while also accommodating recreational needs and setting aside land for agricultural use. In addition it will provide planning certainty for all parties involved – and especially for the airport operator by creating space for key construction projects envisaged in the Sectoral Aviation Infrastructure Plan (SAIP). In the southern sector, moreover, the project serves as an environmental compensation measure for some of the airport infrastructure development projects set out in the SAIP.

At a kick-off event at the end of September 2017 the airport operator and the Zurich cantonal authorities provided information on the current status of the project. The participation process, which was originally initiated by the Canton but was subsequently postponed, was relaunched by the airport operator. Representatives from local municipalities, land owners, land managers, associations and other interest groups were all involved in the process. The knowledge thus gained has been incorporated into the project as far as possible, bearing in mind that interests did not always coincide.

The airport operator will now submit the planning application for the southern sector between Opfikon (Tolwäng) and Rümlang (Fromatt) to the federal government in December 2018. The planning application should be available for public inspection as of mid-February 2019.
