Transferring at Zurich Airport
Are you transferring at Zurich Airport? You will have to pass through a number of checks, depending on where you are travelling from and to.
You can obtain the boarding pass for your onward flight at the transfer counter in the waiting areas. Zurich Airport offers you a wide range of services if you have a long layover.
Routes & checks
Remain in the waiting area
If you wish to remain in the waiting area you only need to pass through the security check before your onward flight. If you are from an EU country and are transferring in Zurich, you can make your way straight to the departure gates.
If you wish to enter Switzerland please observe the entry and customs regulations. If you are travelling within the Schengen area there is no passport check when entering Switzerland.
Travel within the Schengen area
When travelling between countries that adhere to the Schengen Agreement, there is no passport control at Zurich Airport.
These countries include

Travel outside the Schengen area
If you are travelling to or from countries that do not adhere to the Schengen Agreement you will have to pass through passport control in Zurich. Likewise, transfer passengers travelling to or from the Schengen area from a non-Schengen country will have to pass through passport control in Zurich in future.
However you still need a valid travel document that is recognised in Switzerland. In some cases a visa will also be required. Please consult the following page for more information: Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
The gate for your onward flight will be displayed on the monitors at least 60 minutes before departure.
Transferring with luggage
In most cases, your luggage will be forwarded automatically.
Check-in for transfer passengers
As a rule you do not need to check in again when transferring. If it should nevertheless be necessary to check in your luggage or liquids, please leave the transfer zone and pass through immigration into Switzerland. There are no check-in counters in the transfer zone.
Follow the signs „Exit Zurich/Baggage Claim“ and observe the entry and customs regulations. Then go to the check-in desks for your airline.
Free luggage trolleys are available in the transfer zone.
For security reasons there are no lockers in the transfer zone.
Purchasing liquids at airports and on board the plane
It is possible to carry tax and duty free liquids as long as these are packed in a sealed bag with a purchase receipt. The following conditions apply:
Bags that do not meet the above-mentioned ICAO norms must be confiscated and disposed of by security staff.
Tax and duty free liquids must be produced at the security checkpoint and will undergo an additional control. After clearance, they can be taken on board.

Note the flight information on the monitors. Your gate will be displayed at least 60 minutes before your flight.
Do you know the gate number but do not have a boarding pass?
For most airlines you can obtain your boarding pass at the transfer desk or at the gate.
Do you not have a gate number or a boarding pass?
Please contact an information or transfer desk in your waiting area. The route to the waiting areas is signposted and easy to find.
Excursion to Zurich
Depending on the length of your layover you can take advantage of the many services at Zurich Airport.
If your layover is at least 4 hours it's worth visiting the city of Zurich. A train travels from the airport to Zurich every 10 minutes. The journey takes 12 minutes.
